Anime News - 2D Virtual Idol Unit AGC38's 1st Anime Short Film Posted

The idol group will release a music video as well for the song "Sorette Dakara ne!"

The smartphone portal site for Enterbrain's Famitsu game magazine began streaming its "exclusive" premiere of the first anime short from Asahi Productions' two-dimensional virtual idol group AGC38 on Friday. Although the site is geared towards iPhone and Android smartphones, the nine-minute video can be viewed from any platform that plays YouTube videos. 

The short film is named "Sorette Dakara ne!" after the 38-member idol group's official song. It is set in the classes of the Musashi Asahigaoka Girls' Academy that the girls attend.

Asahi Productions announced the project last September as the first talent and entertainment unit comprised entirely of 38 bishōjo characters. In the announcement, Asahi stated that it hopes to develop anime and manga for the project. In December, the group released a shorter animated music video for "Sorette Dakara ne!" The song's CD will go on sale on July 15.

Ack. Judging from personal experience, having a series or an OVA based soly on an idol group just to sell an album or something for the most part never led to anything great. ICE was dog crap. Bronze (yes, I have watched more than a few shonen-ai in my lifetime. Some good, and some terrible) was dog crap sparkled in glitter. But then again, there were some that were okay. Mini Moni TV was actually (outside of cute) pretty good. And I know this doesn't count, but after owning all of the albums that came afterwards, can I mention Macross 7? That series seemed like a promotional anime stretched to 50 or so episodes.

I know there are tons of examples I am missing (don't mention Puffy Ami Yumi) but I am hoping for the best, and that it's not just a music video for the group, moreso that it is an intelligent look at how bittersweet it is to be in a group where you probably have little to no artistic control considering that there are thirty-eight of you performing...Just kidding, I am not expecting friggin' Angel's Egg here. As long as it's decent, I am cool with it.
