Anime News - The Story of Saiunkoku Light Novels to End This Week

After eight years and 18 volumes, Sai Yukino will end Saiunkoku Monogatari (The Story of Saiunkoku) light novel series on Thursday. In this fantasy set in Saiunkoku (an empire inspired by ancient China), a poor yet noble family's daughter named Shuurei rises through the ranks of the imperial palace.
The light novels have 6 million copies in print, and they inspired a manga series (by novel illustrator and Angelique character designer Kairi Yura) and two television anime series between 2006 and 2008.
Viz Media will publish the fourth volume of the manga version in North America in August, while Geneon Entertainment and Funimation released the first television anime season.

I know some guys who like this series. Might not talk to them this month. =D

My Weekend at Megacon Part 2

(from my other blog)

...

After the Trina Nishimura/Jaime March event, I was supposed stick around and stay in the Main Events F/G/H room with Russell for photography duty for the event. When I opened my laptop and read the next event's details, I knew that the next crowd would be even more rabid than the last. I told Russell about it, and he seemed to know what was to come. Within seconds, Edward Elric cosplayers and others of the pre-teen variety all swarmed the room. Masses of Yaoi and Yuri paddles were abound. Chants for "We want Vic!" were heard. Vic Micnogna and Colleen Clinkenbeard finally appeared, and the place went berserk. Vic and Colleen introduced themselves, and obviously when Vic did, the fangirls started to scream. I thought I was in hell. For those of you who don't know these guys I'll explain. Vic Micnogna is an extremely popular Voice Actor who has starred in the most popular anime in the U.S, like Full Metal Alchemist (Edward) and One Piece (Nezumi). Colleen Clinkenbeard is a Voice Actress who also starred in many fan favorites including Full Metal Alchemist (Riza), Case Closed (Rachel), and One Piece (Luffy).

At this point in the blog, you may notice that Vic Mignogna was the star attraction in this event, and bygod, you're right [/insert sarcasm]. Almost all of the questions were directed towards Vic, like "How does it feel being Edward's VA?" and "Who was your favorite character you voiced as?", the latter leading to an answer that the audience screamed over. I loved how almost all of these questions were ones that Colleen could have easily answered, and felt really sorry for her (or well, anyone who shares a show with Vic). Nothing against the guy, I think he's pretty cool, actually. Just saying that it was kinda weird seeing someone share a panel with someone and not get much attention.

I viewed my schedule and realized I was late for an event going on at the same time, the Super Anime Trivia. I went to room B, to find that my friend Kent Ward and one of the founders of the UCF anime club, Anime Spot, was on the stage. They were in the middle of a question about Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, one of my favorite comic books. I wanted to answer the question so much, but I, being the camera man, couldn't. Overall, it was a fun event. Here's some shots of the event.

I promise to update this crazy, fun, and photo-heavy post on part 3.

My Weekend at Megacon '11 part 1

For those who don't know, Megacon is arguably the biggest Comic Book/Anime convention in Florida. It is normally held in the Orange County Convention Center. Now, having been a member of the Propeller Anime Club at Full Sail, I was given volunteering duties. Having worked the convention for 3 years, I knew the crap I would have to go through in terms of line control and setup. However, this year was different. Since I became a graphic designer, I had always taken pictures, conventions included. However, photography was never an actual duty within my schedule in convention volunteering. So, on top of the stuff I had to do, I was to deal with photography as well, be it panels, or events. I knew this was a great opportunity to show off some of my photography skills, and to make the news that much better, my 18-135mm diaphragm broke. Yeah!

So let's start off with the hotel. I met up with a good friend of mine (we'll call him "Waldo"), and he asked if he was willing to share a room with someone over the weekend. He said he was. That's right, he was staying at the Peabody, a rather high-class-ish hotel that was located right next to the west concourse of the Orange County Convention. My Nikon D90 (don't worry, I borrowed a 18-70mm lens) battery was low, so I managed some great....

 ..and not-so-great shots.

Ugh.
So, yeah. I couldn't wait to start work the next day.

I woke up and started my venture towards the West Concourse. (and snuck some solid shots).

I made it! Thankfully, all I had to do was to walk through this walkway adjacent to the hotel. I arrived at 224-B, where the volunteers were to meet. I was there extra early, so after setting my D90's battery charger on a random power strip, I took a look at my volunteer's schedule and saw that my first job was to do photography duty for the Trina Nakamura/Jaime Marchi panel. After meeting with Russell, the guy handling the video and film, we went straight to room 224 F/G/H (appropriately called the Main Event Room). We were greeted by the guys running the projectors and audio, as well as the hostesses of the panel. Trina Nakamura and Jaime Marchi, for those wondering, are Voice Actresses. Their resumes include Fruits Basket, Full Metal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Blassreiter, etc. I actually loved how down-to-earth they were, and it was a blast talking with and shooting images of their panel.
Here are some shots for you guys.

Removed Itsuka Tenma no Kuro-Usagi Preview Updated, Reposted

The official website for the Itsuka Tenma no Kuro-Usagi television anime series began streaming the second version of a preview video that was posted on June 8, only to removed because "the content violated YouTube's Terms of Service." The website describes the new version as "powered up," although it is slightly shorter than the first version and some scenes had been edited out.

The"dangerous school fantasy" story follow a seemingly ordinary high school boy named Taito Kurogane (Shinnosuke Tachibana) whose life is changed after an encounter with a female vampire named Saitohimea (Megumi Takamoto). Taito and his allies fight against the evil plan to resurrect the powerful vampire Bahlskra.
A producer for the anime noted on Twitter on June 15 that the staff could not deliver the anime to television stations unedited due to its many explicit scenes. However, the staff is still producing the unedited version for BD and DVDs, as well as for event screenings such as those happening in Tokyo's Akihabara otaku shopping district on July 7 and 8.
The anime is slated to premiere on July 8. The official website also confirmed that the staff is making an animated crossover between Itsu-Ten and The Legend of the Legendary Heroes (Densetsu no YÅ«sha no Densetsuor DenYÅ«Den) fantasy story. Author Takaya Kagami wrote the original light novels for both Itsu-Ten and DenYÅ«Den.

Anime News - Digital Manga Guild Assigns Its 1st 3 Titles

The North American publisher Digital Manga Inc. (DMI) announced the first titles that it is planning to release under its Digital Manga Guild program on Friday: Rihito Takarai's Hana No Mizo Shiru (Only The Flower Knows), Mario Yamada's Chuuken wa Hana o Matsu (The Faithful Dog Waits For Flowers), and Saki Aida & Yugi Yamada's Aisotsukashi (Tired of Waiting For Love).

DMI assigned all three boys-love manga titles to the group Kawaii Neko to localize into English. DMI plans to announce more Guild titles at its panel at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Last summer, DMI revealed its plans for the Guild, which allows fans to translate, edit, and letter works legally with the permission of the original Japanese owners. Under the program, the guild members are credited and paid royalties from online purchases, and the works may be published in print if they prove to be popular.

Just trying to be fair and balanced, since I'll probably never read these. However, I didn't know that DMI created an actual guild for digital manga publication.

What Am I Watching - Steins;Gate

Synopsis - Rintaro Okabe (refers himself as Hououin Kyoma) is a mad scientest hell-bent on proving that time travel exists. He later meets Mikase Kurisu, who debunks his theory in class, and embarrasses him. He finds her dead body and texts his friend (Daru) on what he had found. Now here's the twist: He and Daru meets Kurisu, and Daru says that he got Rintaro's text one week ago. Oh, and an organization named SERN is after him, too.

Review - While looking up the Spring season with a buddy of mine, she mentioned this show. I took a gander and thought, "Hey, what can I lose? The art looks fantastic.". Then, while another friend was looking for Spring anime, I mentioned this show (without seeing it first). You know, the I have heard it was awesome line. So, I checked it out, and...

...I liked it.

I really liked it.

The story is very interesting, and in many ways unique. The story of time travel always intrigues me, but when you add a microwave that doubles as a teleporter, how can you not be interested? There's also the very strange stuff that happen to our mad scientist, like him skipping time, and while returning, seeing a spaceship crashed on a building. Or when, as stated, he finds Kurisu's dead body and sees her later on? And what about the gel bananas!!~??

Oh...sorry.

But like I said, the show definitely reminds me of Half-Life and Beaker's World, and that by itself is worth noting.

Speaking of Beaker, Okarin (as he's called, but he'd recommend you wouldn't) is a unique character in it of himself. He has a pen name for himself that he demands everyone call him, he owns a special lab that holds three members (Daru, Mayuri, and himself), and he comes up with fantastic scientific claims. His cockiness is what attracts me to him. He truly believes that his wacky experiments will work, from the toy gun that doubles as a remote control, to the microwave that runs backwards and turns bananas into jelly. He truly shows the confidence that is needed to be a successful man of science.

His assistants are just as special as he is. Mayuri is a really simple person, and until a few episodes in, is the only female member of the laboratory. She normally brings food to the other members, while they're working for the benefit of science (~!). Her attitude in life is total change of pace from the dark atmosphere the show's in.

Daru himself, is actually kind of cool, too. I used to forget he existed, but after the murder incident, he is starting to show his character. The skeptic of the bunch, he's normally the first to question Rintaro's motives, and make him look like a fool in the process. He also epitomizes the term basement nerd, as he is normally found in the back of a maid cafe, hacking a computer, and spouting "FAIL" at people. He's also a bit of a pervert, asking people to repeat what they say if it sounds kind of dirty (Can you please repeat "who wants to eat a pervert's banana"? And if you don't mind, do it with a mad expression in your face). There seems to be some sort of camaraderie between the guys, as Rintaro always looks to him for help when something goes screwy.

Rintaro and Daru

Since I already spoiled what happened with Kurisu, I'll describe her. She's from America (US, I'd assume), and is more of a skeptic than Daru. She debunked some of Rintaro's theories, which led to Rintaro hating her guts. As a matter of fact, some of my favorite parts in the series normally involve Rintaro and Kurisu.

Don't call her Christina.
On the audio side of things, I like it. The opening is catchy as hell. The audio increases some of the tension, and lightens up the mood when needed. The Japanese voice acting was noticeably great. I adore Rintaro's voice, especially when he's toying with someone's feelings (episode 3). Mayuki and Daru's voices fit their characters quite well. Mayuki definitely sounds like someone who isn't there, lol.

The art got me into the show anyway, but when I watched it, it continues to amaze me. I like the artist's style especially when drawing Kurisu and Mayuki's facial expressions. Kurisu looks eternally grumpy, and it looks kinda funny, but in a great way. Not to say the males don't look bad. For example, Rintaro makes for a cool-looking a scientist. One thing that kinda stuck to me was the tone of the show. Now, it may be because I have only watched the first 3 episodes, but this show isn't exactly Darkside Blues. Thankfully, the show does indeed have conspiracies and shocks here and there, but at first, while visually enticing, I was kinda confused.

So, after three episodes, what do I think of this show? It's definitely one of the best shows that have come out this Spring. Its unique story and characters, as well as the situation involving time travel, should be able to hold you throughout the twelve or thirteen episodes it has (I believe). There are even internet jokes dispersed here and there. So, if you hate Bill Nye, you'll probably hate this series, but if you like series involving someone trying to innovate science, medicine and technology (Trapeze), people trying to find answers on what already exists (Mythbusters or Braniac), or just stories of murder and intrigue (Monster, Death Note), then this is going to entice you.
